Deck building in Calgary, made for chinook season
A Calgary deck earns its keep from May to October and gets punished the other six months. Silverstone builds pressure-treated, cedar and composite decks on footings set for frost, with railings and stairs that stay solid.
Free quotes. Most estimates can start from photos; site verification is arranged when needed.
What Silverstone handles
New decks, rebuilds and repairs
A deck is a structure with a floor you barbecue on. It has footings, beams, spans and railing loads, and in Calgary it also has frost heave and chinook cycling working on every connection.
Silverstone builds new decks, tears off and rebuilds tired ones on sound framing, and repairs boards, stairs and railings when the bones are still good.
The cost of getting this wrong: a deck on shallow footings heaves out of level within a couple of winters, and a railing that loosens is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one. Decks built to code hold their value; improvised ones show up on home inspections.
- New deck builds. Footings, framing, decking, stairs and railings as one written scope.
- Rebuilds and re-decking. New surface and rails on sound framing, or a full teardown when the structure is done.
- Railings and stairs. Wood or metal railing systems and stairs built to code heights and spacing.
- Repairs. Soft boards, loose rails and sinking piers fixed honestly, without upselling a rebuild that is not needed.
- Deck and fence together. One quote, one mobilization, one matching backyard.
Options & project types
Three ways to build a Calgary deck
We price the option you want, and flag when another material fits your budget and maintenance appetite better. The choice stays yours.
Pressure-treated wood
The budget workhorse. Strong, widely available and easy to repair. Plan on staining every few seasons to keep it looking sharp.
Cedar
Warmer colour and naturally weather-resistant. Costs more than pressure-treated and rewards regular care with a deck that ages beautifully.
Composite
No staining, no splinters, consistent colour for decades. The highest up-front cost and the lowest weekend maintenance of the three.
What's included
How a deck build runs
- Photos and dimensions first. Most deck quotes start remotely; we confirm layout and grades on site.
- Written proposal. Material, framing plan, railing style and price in writing, with options priced separately.
- Permit check. Calgary requires a building permit once the deck surface passes 0.6 metres above grade. We flag it during the quote so the paperwork stays boring.
- Footings below frost. Piers set to depth so the deck stays level through freeze-thaw.
- Frame, deck, rail. Built square, fastened right, stairs and railings to code.
- Cleanup and walkthrough. Offcuts hauled, site raked, and a final walk of the finished deck with you.
What this looks like when it's working
Summer evenings happen out back instead of in the basement. The gate from the deck to the yard swings clean, the rail doesn't wiggle when the kids lean on it, and the whole backyard finally works as one space.
Pairs perfectly with a fence
A deck and fence quoted together means one crew visit and a backyard that matches itself. Most of our deck requests arrive with a fence attached.

What does a deck cost in Calgary?
Deck pricing follows size and height, material, railing choice and how many stairs the grade demands. A low platform deck in pressure-treated wood and a walkout-height composite deck with glass-look railings are different projects, and honest quotes treat them that way.
Permits are part of the math: the City of Calgary requires a building permit for decks higher than 0.6 metres above grade, and the city's deck page covers the details. We flag whether yours needs one during the quote.

- Size and height. More area means more structure; walkout heights add framing, stairs and permit scope.
- Material. Pressure-treated, cedar and composite climb in that order up front.
- Railings. The railing system is often a third of the budget on elevated decks.
- Teardown. Removing and hauling an old deck is real work and gets its own line.
Common concerns
Deck questions we hear most
"Our old deck slopes. Rebuild or repair?"
Depends what moved. If piers sank, the frame needs attention; if boards cupped, a re-deck on sound framing saves real money. Photos usually tell us which conversation to have.
"Composite seems expensive."
Up front, it is. Priced across ten years of skipped staining weekends, the gap shrinks. We'll quote your first choice and the alternative so you decide with numbers.
"When should we book?"
Deck season books up through spring. Quoting in winter or early spring locks scope and gets first pick of the calendar.
Deck FAQs
Quick answers
How much does a new deck cost in Calgary?
It's priced from size, height, material and railing choice, so quotes vary widely and flat numbers online mislead. Silverstone quotes each deck free from photos and dimensions, with materials priced side by side when you're deciding.
Do I need a permit for a deck in Calgary?
Yes, once the deck surface sits higher than 0.6 metres above grade at any point. Lower platform decks often don't need one. We check yours during the quote and build to the permitted drawings when a permit applies.
Wood or composite: which should I pick?
Pressure-treated wood costs least and repairs easily. Cedar looks warmest and needs regular care. Composite costs most once and skips staining forever. Sun exposure, budget and how you feel about maintenance weekends decide it.
Can you rebuild on my existing frame?
Often, yes. If footings and framing are sound, new decking and railings transform the deck for far less than a full rebuild. We inspect before recommending either way.
How long does a deck build take?
Scope and weather decide it. Straightforward decks often wrap within days once materials land and any permit is in place. Your written proposal includes the real schedule for your build.
Do you build stairs and railings only?
Yes. Railing swaps, stair rebuilds and code fixes are real jobs to us, and they're often what a deck actually needs.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes. Yard photos, rough dimensions and the height off grade start the estimate remotely. We confirm on site before building.
