Fencing & gates · Calgary
Fence installation in Calgary that stays standing
Chinook gusts and frost heave wreck shortcut fences fast. Silverstone builds wood, vinyl, chain-link and metal fences on posts set below the frost line, with gates that still swing straight years later.
Free. A few yard photos and the fence length get your quote moving.
What Silverstone handles
New builds, replacements and repairs
A fence is a structure, not yard decor. It has footings, spans and wind load, and in Calgary it gets tested every winter. We build fence lines that are straight on day one and still straight after the chinooks have had their turn.
Post holes are dug only after utility locates are confirmed, posts are set below frost depth, and hardware is chosen for the gate to actually survive being used.
The cost of getting this wrong: shallow posts heave the first winter, panels rack, and the gate drags within a season. A cheap fence that needs rebuilding in five years isn't cheap. It's the same fence bought twice.
- New fence installation. Layout, utility locates, posts, panels and cleanup.
- Full replacements. Old fence torn out and hauled away, new line built right.
- Section repairs. Leaning posts, broken boards and storm damage fixed without replacing the whole run when it's not needed.
- Gates. Single and double gates framed against sag, hung on hardware that lasts.
- Shared-line coordination. Quotes written so cost-splitting with a neighbour is simple and documented.
Options & materials
Four ways to build a fence line
We'll price the option you want, and flag when a different material fits your exposure or budget better. The choice stays yours.
Wood & cedar
The classic Calgary look, warm and easy to customize. Pressure-treated posts carry the structure; cedar boards keep it handsome. Plan on staining to get the longest life.
Vinyl
No staining, no rot, consistent colour for years. Costs more up front than wood and pays it back in weekends you don't spend maintaining it.
Chain-link
The budget workhorse. Ideal for dog runs, side yards and back lanes where function beats looks. Privacy slats available.
Metal & ornamental
Clean lines, serious durability and wind that passes straight through. A strong choice for front yards and modern exteriors.

What's included
How a fence build runs
- Quote from photos. Fence length, material and yard photos are enough to start. We verify lines on site.
- Written proposal. Material, post spacing, gate count and price, in writing.
- Locates before digging. Utility locates are confirmed before a single post hole goes in.
- Posts below frost depth. Set and aligned so the line stays true through freeze-thaw.
- Panels, gates, hardware. Built square, hung level, latched clean.
- Haul-away and walkthrough. Old material gone, yard raked, and a final walk of the line with you.
What this looks like when it's working
The dog stays in, the gate closes with one hand, and the line reads straight from the back window. Next door's fence leans a little more every spring. Yours doesn't.
Repairs welcome
Not every fence needs replacing. If new posts and a straightened gate buy your fence real years, that's what we'll quote.

What Calgary does to fences
Chinook winds
Warm winter winds arrive fast and hit hard, and a solid privacy fence acts like a sail. Post depth, spacing and rail attachment decide whether the line shrugs it off.
Frost heave
Prairie soil moves as it freezes and thaws. Posts that stop above frost depth get pushed up a little every year until the fence waves at the street.
Dry sun
Calgary's UV is hard on untreated wood. Stain schedules and material choice decide how the fence looks in year eight, not year one.
Common concerns
Fence questions we hear most
"My neighbour should split the cost."
Common, and workable. We write the quote so the shared portion is clearly itemized, which makes the neighbour conversation a two-minute one.
"I only need two posts fixed."
Then that's the quote. Small repairs are real jobs to us, and they're often how clients meet Silverstone before the bigger projects.
"Every quote I got was wildly different."
Fence quotes vary because scope is vague. Ours itemizes material, post depth, gate hardware and haul-away, so you can compare like against like.
Bylaws & budget
Do you need a permit for a fence in Calgary?
Usually, no. The City of Calgary doesn't require a permit for most residential fences that stay within bylaw heights: up to 2 metres in the backyard, 1.2 metres in front of the house, and 0.75 metres inside a corner visibility triangle. Taller builds, fences on retaining walls and some corner-lot situations can need approvals. The city's fences and retaining walls page has the fine print.
Silverstone builds fence lines to bylaw limits and confirms utility locates before a single post hole is dug, so the paperwork side stays boring.
On price, a fence is quoted from its length, material, gate count and tear-out. Pick two materials on the free quote form and we'll price them side by side.
- Length and gates. Every extra run and every gate adds posts, hardware and hours.
- Material. Chain-link, pressure-treated wood, cedar, vinyl and metal climb in that general order.
- Tear-out. Removing and hauling an old fence is real work and shows up as its own line.
- Ground and access. Slopes, tree roots and tight side yards slow the digging, and the digging is the job.
Fencing FAQs
Quick answers
How do I get a fence quote in Calgary?
Send the fence length, the material you're leaning toward, and photos of the yard through the quote form. Most fence estimates start remotely, and we confirm lines and gates before building.
How much does a new fence cost in Calgary?
Fence pricing follows length, material, gate count and tear-out, so quotes vary house to house. Silverstone itemizes all four in a free written proposal, and will price two materials side by side so you're comparing real numbers.
How tall can a fence be in Calgary?
City of Calgary bylaws allow up to 2 metres in the backyard, 1.2 metres in the front yard, and 0.75 metres inside a corner visibility triangle without a permit. Silverstone builds to those limits, and flags the exceptions like corner lots and retaining walls before work starts.
When is the best time to build a fence in Calgary?
Any time the ground is workable, roughly spring thaw through freeze-up. Crews book up fastest in early summer, so quoting in spring gets better scheduling. Repairs and gates are often possible outside that window.
Can you replace just part of a fence?
Yes. Leaning posts, broken boards and sagging gates can often be fixed in sections. We'll tell you honestly when a full replacement is the smarter spend.
What happens with the old fence?
Tear-out and haul-away are part of the scope. Your yard is left clean, not stacked with old lumber.
Do you build gates too?
Yes. Single and double gates are framed to resist sag, hung on proper hardware, and included in the written proposal alongside the fence itself.
